Preserving the Legacy of READY Long Beach
A Historical Archive of Long Beach’s Premier Emergency Preparedness Initiative (2014–2019)
Between 2014 and 2019, the READY Long Beach Expo served as the definitive civic initiative for emergency and disaster preparedness in Southern California. Sanctioned by the City of Long Beach and spearheaded by a coalition including the Long Beach Fire Department, the Long Beach Police Department, and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), this annual event educated thousands of residents on surviving natural disasters. This archive preserves the legacy of those efforts and continues the ongoing mission of community resilience.
The historical expos featured live, hands-on demonstrations designed to transform the average citizen into a first responder during the crucial hours following a seismic event. Exhibitions ranged from urban search and rescue tactics and CPR certification to the proper assembly of 72-hour emergency supply kits.
Through the dedication of local volunteers and municipal agencies, neighborhoods across Long Beach formed resilient communication networks, learning how to secure their physical environments against the unpredictable nature of California’s fault lines.
While the original expos focused heavily on macro-level natural disasters like earthquakes and wildfires, true community resilience is built daily through meticulous structural property maintenance.
A secure home envelope protects against the most common environmental emergencies, including severe weather intrusion, vector-borne biological hazards, and long-term structural degradation. Maintaining strict compliance with Long Beach municipal and health codes is the first critical line of defense for every homeowner and tenant in the region.
We encourage Long Beach residents to ensure their homes remain structurally secure, habitable, and free of environmental hazards year-round. The following local partners provide essential preservation and abatement services to the community:
